Wahoo Commute

About Wahoo Commute

The Department of Parking and Transportation has partnered with Luum to bring full and part-time UVA staff and faculty a new commuter incentive program called Wahoo Commute. The program offers various incentives and features to make commuting to Grounds via alternative transportation easier and more worthwhile for employees. The supported alternative commute modes are walking, riding a bike, scooter, or bus, or participating in a carpool or vanpool.

Wahoo Commute goes live on September 23, 2024!

Program Highlights

Earn and Win Cash Incentives

Wahoo Commute enables employees to earn cash incentives by commuting to work using alternative transportation. The two main cash incentives are the Commute Bonus and Commute Raffle. The Commute Bonus is a daily dollar amount you can earn by logging your alternative commute. For example, you can earn $1 every day you carpool. By logging your commute, you are also entered into the monthly Commute Raffle worth $1,000 (two employees are drawn to win $500 each). The more commutes you log, the more entries in the raffle you get.

Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) is Now an Option

Wahoo Commute gives employees access to four free rides from work per year on days they use alternative transportation to commute to Grounds. These guaranteed rides home (or elsewhere) can provide peace of mind if something were to happen and you can’t use your alternative commute mode.

Afton Express Goes Fare Free

Wahoo Commute has partnered with Afton Express to make the bus service fare-free for all UVA affiliates. Starting September 23rd, all you need to do is show the driver your valid UVA ID in lieu of payment when you board.  For those with unused fare cards (no punches made), you will be able to return them to P&T for a full refund.

Carpool Changes

The Cavpool program is being retired in favor of the new, comprehensive Wahoo Commute. Carpoolers will no longer get discounts on parking permits. Instead, they will get the daily Commute Bonus cash incentive. Current Cavpoolers will be contacted via email with more details and how to transfer their permits. For those looking to form a new carpool, Wahoo Commute offers a closed-network carpool matching tool so employees can find others interested as well.

Vanpool Changes

UVA-sponsored vanpools will be transitioning to a fixed, subsidized monthly rate for employee participation. No more worrying about flucuating costs with changing membership.

E-Bike Rebate

Wahoo Commute offers employees an opportunity to earn a $400 rebate on qualifying electric bike purchases.

Employee Eligibility

Most UVA employees are eligible to participate in Wahoo Commute. Eligibility is governed by employment categories and worksite location. Eligible employees meet the following criteria:

  • Be full or part-time (wage) UVA staff or faculty
  • Be an Academic, Medical Center, or University Physicians Group (UPG) employee
  • Be payroll deduction eligible
  • Have a designated worksite location in Charlottesville, VA

Student and contingent employees are not eligible to participate at this time.
