Vanpools are like carpools except that instead of using someone's personal vehicle, members of the vanpool share the cost of leasing a van. Vanpool participants can expect to save money on gas, wear and tear on their vehicles, and parking fees. In addition, participants can reclaim the time lost commuting for personal use and don't have the stress of driving. Combined with the natural environmental benefits, vanpooling is a win-win for everyone.
While part of our CavPool program, vanpools are managed by Commute with Enterprise. Full-time riders make a single monthly payment to Enterprise that covers the lease, fuel, insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance. The monthly rate depends on the size of vehicle, travel distance, fuel cost, and number of participants. Vanpools require at least 5 participants and can accommodate as many as 15.
For all the details regarding vanpools, please refer to the UVA Vanpool Agreement. All vanpool participants must sign the agreement before they are allowed to ride. If you have any questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.

$500 monthly subsidy
Each vanpool receives a $500/month subsidy from P&T that reduces the overall cost of the vanpool. Vanpools may also be eligible for additional subsidies from federal, state, and local governments.
Free CavPool parking permit
Vanpools receive a complimentary CavPool parking permit that is valid in up to two approved areas of the participants' choice. Having two parking locations makes it convenient for driver rotation when participants work at different sites on Grounds.
Occasional parking permits
Vanpool members annually receive 20 free days of occasional parking permits intended for days when they must drive themselves. These permits provide limited-use parking in an approved lot of the participant's choice.
Premium CavPool parking spaces
We have designated spaces in several of our parking areas for carpools and vanpools. These spaces are often located near the exits of parking garages, entrances of buildings, and near bus stops. Your CavPool permit allows you to park in designated CavPool spaces. Don't see CavPool spaces in your parking area? Email firstname.lastname@example.org and we will review it as a possibility.
Note: A CavPool participant cannot park in a CavPool space when using an occasional parking permit.
Permit repurchase guarantee
In the event that a member decides to leave a vanpool, they are able to repurchase their original permit in their previous assignment within 30 days, even if there is a waitlist.
Guaranteed ride home
All vanpoolers are eligible for a guaranteed ride home in case of emergencies through the regional RideShare program. Users must register in advance to receive vouchers for five free trips per calendar year.
