UVA Parking and Transportation has developed the following Passenger Policies in support of our commitment to provide safe, reliable, efficient, and friendly transit service to University of Virginia students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Passenger Rules
The Passenger Rules apply to all transportation services offered by UVA Parking and Transportation, including University Transit Service buses, UTS OnDemand vehicles, and U-Heights Shuttle. Individual P&T transportation services may have additional rules not listed here.
Passengers who fail to adhere to the Passenger Rules, any applicable University of Virginia policy, or any applicable federal, state, or local law may be instructed to disembark the vehicle. Passengers who refuse to disembark the vehicle as instructed or who repeatedly/egregiously fail to adhere to the Passenger Rules will be referred to law enforcement and will be denied transportation service in the future.
Rules
- Shirts, pants/shorts/skirts, and shoes must be worn at all times.
- Headphones/earbuds are to be used with all audio devices.
- Eating is not permitted aboard the vehicle. Transportation of food and/or beverage is permitted if contents are properly sealed and unopened.
- Drinking of non-alcohol beverages aboard the vehicle is permitted ONLY if beverage contained in sturdy, re-closable container which prevents spills.
- Any activity or behavior which disrupts or threatens the safety, comfort, or peace of others is prohibited (e.g. fighting, horseplaying, using obscene/insulting/threatening language or gestures, soliciting, harassing, intimidating, etc.)
- Smoking and vaping are prohibited as per University of Virginia Policy SEC-028.
- Weapons as outlined in University of Virginia Policy SEC-030 are prohibited.
- Hazardous, explosive, corrosive, or flammable materials are prohibited aboard the vehicle.
- Use of alcohol or illegal substances aboard the vehicle is prohibited.
- Discharging body fluids aboard the vehicle is prohibited.
- Vandalism, graffiti, or posting of materials aboard the vehicle is prohibited.
- Pets are not permitted aboard the vehicle. Service animals are permitted aboard the
vehicle for persons with disabilities. Service animals must remain under handler control
and must not exhibit dangerous or disruptive behavior.

Lost & Found Policy
Passengers may contact University Transit Service at via e-mail at [email protected] or at
434-924-7711 regarding items left on UTS vehicles. Any items left on a University Transit Service vehicle
will remain aboard the vehicle until the vehicle returns to the lot at end of service. After the UTS vehicle
returns to the lot, lost items are processed and held as detailed below.
University Transit Service doesn’t keep the following items in Lost & Found.
They are immediately disposed of in an appropriate manner.
- Perishables including food, liquids, and their containers
- Any and all drugs and alcohol, including medicine, cigarettes, tobacco, and e-vapes
- Loose papers
- Any items that are wet or dirty
- Any items that may be biohazardous
- Loose cosmetic products (makeup, lip balm, etc.)
- Trash
University Transit Service will contact University Police Department regarding any illegal or dangerous items left on vehicles.
For all University of Virginia property (ID badges, UVA keys, library books, etc.), University Transit Service will attempt to return item to appropriate department within 2 business days. Unreturnable items will be treated like all other property as detailed below.

Any claim to a lost item must include proof of ownership. This claim must include the date that the item was lost and a sufficient item description. In order to receive the lost item from University Transit Service, claimants must also provide photo identification with full name and sign the claim log. University Transit Service will not release items to claimants who fail to establish proof of ownership, do not provide photo identification, or do not sign the claim log.
Any claims to items in long-term storage must be submitted electronically to [email protected] with sufficient proof of ownership. Additionally, any claim to a lost item in long-term storage may include charges for storage or other services necessary to preserve the property.
