Important P&T Information and Updates

  • Please see our Service Schedule for important changes to transit and parking service levels during the change from winter service to service for the spring semester. Parking enforcement for all locations will remain in effect unless otherwise noted on the Service Schedule.

  • Safe Ride services are currently provided by Yellow Cab of Charlottesville. Yellow Cab offers the ability to book in advance and track the vehicle. Call (434) 242-1122 to request a ride. Find more information about Safe Ride provided by Yellow Cab, HERE.
  • Important details on Safe Ride service:
    • Safe Ride services are available daily from 5:00 AM to 7:30 AM and 10:00 PM to 12:00 AM.
  • Parking meters and pay stations in all applicable parking locations have been removed or deactivated. Please use ParkMobile to pay for metered parking.
  • Parking permits, including student permits can be purchases via the Online Parking Portal 

Central Grounds Garage: Operational Update

Validation Changes to the Central Grounds Garage                     

Parking and Transportation implemented a gateless payment in the Central Grounds Garage in January 2019. By removing the gates and the accompanying booths, we are able to alleviate traffic queues, particularly upon exiting. No more waiting in line to pay to get out!

How do I park with the gates gone?

Simply remember: “Park-Pay-Proceed.” Upon arrival at the garage, customers park their car, pay at one of the five pay stations, then proceed to their destination.

How do I pay for parking?

Inside the garage there are five meter pay stations: one by the elevators on each floor and one at the Newcomb Road exit. The pay stations accept cash, credit card, and ParkMobile, a mobile app that allows you to purchase parking from your smart device. The machines also accept coupons.

How do validations work?

Participating departments can now request coupon codes instead of validation tickets. Guests must enter their coupon code at the pay station immediately after parking. This is where the work may come for the hosting department. If you have guests coming to a meeting or event, then you will need to send them the code BEFORE they arrive, so they can use it right after parking in the garage. You should be cautious in giving out coupon codes, as they pay for a parking session whenever used and bills back to your department. Billing occurs each month, and we can work with you on the valid duration of a coupon code. Please fill out the Coupon Code Request Form to receive a Department Coupon. 

How do I use the pay stations? 

When parking, immediate payment is required at the pay station, and your license plate number must be input as well. In the hopes of easing anxiety over these changes, we have provided step-by-step instructions for using the new pay stations.

How is the garage enforced?

Regardless of how a parking session is purchased, customers are always be required to input their license plate number. Enforcement staff use license plate recognition software to determine whether vehicles have and have not paid.
